Porn and Prejudice: Exploring the Darker Side of Online Searches

If you’re at all like me, you’ve never wondered what the most common search terms are on the world’s biggest online source of occasionally-copyright-infringing porn. And yet I find myself noticing that PornHub (the site I just described in admittedly less-than-flattering terms) released data about what people are searching for on their site. The data include the most common search term used in each state on the site, and the average amount of time spent on the site (which streams videos, YouTube-style).

The winners for longest time spent on the site are Mississippi and Hawaii, with an average of over 11 minutes and 48 seconds per visit. New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island users clock and average of ten minutes or less. Read into all of that whatever you will, especially the part about Mississippi.

The more interesting aspect of the search, at least to me, is the identification of popular search terms. This presumably only covers the one site, so it’s not even remotely a scientific sample, but it’s interesting nonetheless. A revision to PornHub’s map is color-coded to highlight search terms:

Some of these are surprising, others not so much. I see Texas is still a red state, although this time it signifies that people here are searching the word……”teen.” Okay, seriously, Texas, I don’t care if you think Oregon is cool, you don’t have to try to be like them. Bad Texas, bad!

Let me talk to Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia for a second……actually, no, I don’t want to talk to them. They know what they did. (Seriously, though, what is up with the word “ebony”? Is it some porn attempt at racial sensitivity? Because racial sensitivity is not something the adult entertainment world seems to do well.)

Virginia and Kentucky: Hentai? Y’all are a bit wilder than I thought.

Florida, et al: I like pie. By that I mean actual pie, with crust and various types of filling. Now my brain is grossed out, and I blame all of you. Really, though, who came up with that slang term?

Nevada: “Anita Queen.” Wait, what? You’re the only state searching for a specific person. Great, now I’m curious. Fear not, gentle reader(s), for since my Google search history is already irredeemably compromised, I will research this for you. It’s not hard to figure out who Anita Queen is, but I can’t seem to figure out why Nevadans (presumably Las Vegasians, or Las Vegans?) are searching for her more than any other search term on this one website. According to IMDB and the Internet Adult Film Database (yes, that’s a thing, and it’s quite NSFW), she’s from the Czech Republic. According to YouTube (also sorta NSFW), she’s from Lithuania. (That YouTube video also says she was 22 years old in 2012, though, while IMDB says she was born in 1978. I’m going with IMDB. That would make her a 34 year-old Czech adult entertainer.)

You can Google her yourself for more info. The strange thing about it is that nothing much comes up if you Google her name and “Las Vegas” or “Nevada,” other than links to pages discussing PornHub’s data. Also, if you search her name on the PornHub site itself (yes, I looked), you only get six search results. ‘Tis a mystery I do not feel the need to explore any further than I already have.
