Exploring the Mythical Friend Zone

This comic by mamamantis sums up the entire “friend zone” and NiceGuy™ phenomena beautifully (h/t Jason):

Porn and Prejudice: On and On We Go (UPDATED)

UPDATE (01/29/2014): She got reinstated. I take no credit for it.

Sit down, Waldo!

Bonus points if you get the reference.

Yet another teacher has been suspended (which may or may not be code for “fired”) after daring to reveal that she is in fact naked underneath all of her clothing. This time she’s an elementary school special education teacher (or teacher’s aide, depending on the news source). An “anonymous source” sent copies of not-quite-nude pictures to the school’s administration, which is a real classy move:

A Fitchburg teacher’s aide who moonlights as a model of sexy lingerie has sparked a debate over what conduct is befitting of an educator outside the classroom.

Many people seem to have no issue with Kaitlin Pearson’s modeling portfolio, while others are questioning whether someone who works with young children should be posing for racy photos.

Regardless, Superintendent of Schools André Ravenelle placed Pearson on paid administrative leave early Friday afternoon after the district was anonymously sent a packet containing her modeling photos.

Pearson has been working in one of South Street Elementary School’s special-education programs as a full-time classroom assistant for a small group of students since November.

***

Ravenelle said he was not aware of Pearson’s modeling photos until school officials were mailed the anonymous packet. A similar packet was also sent to the Sentinel & Enterprise. Ravenelle placed Pearson on administrative leave before speaking with a reporter for this article.

A short note, typed in all capital letters, that was included in the packet sent to the Sentinel & Enterprise read, in part: “Can you believe that this girl was hired to work with special education children in the Fitchburg schools?!!” [Emphasis added.] Continue reading

This Week in WTF, January 24, 2014

– See my vest? Some fashion editor wore a coat made from a gorilla out in public recently (h/t Laura). Her response to criticism was that she “received the coat as a gift from a friend who is vegetarian.” Maybe the gorilla died of natural causes.

And they say romance is dead: Back in November, an Oklahoma State football fan managed to get his homemade sign in the background of ESPN’s College Gameday. The sign made some off-color comparisons between the inadequacy of Baylor’s defense and pornographic actress Lisa Ann’s, uh…..the sign said “Baylor’s defense has more holes to fill than Lisa Ann.”

(Not all of you know who Lisa Ann is, and others of you will pretend you don’t. The hyperlink on her name goes to her Wikipedia page. Her pictures of Wikimedia Commons push the NSFW boundaries. For anything else, do your own Googling.)

She apparently thought the sign was funny, or charming, or something, and the two kept in touch. (I can’t believe I just linked to TMZ.) They were both back in the news because he was her date to the AVN (Adult Video News) Awards last weekend. Did I mentioned he’s a freshman at OSU? My freshman year of college was kind of dull—it certainly did not involve a trip to Vegas with a 41 year-old woman who received a “Hottest MILF” award.

The OSU student tweeted the picture to the right, and of course the internet’s mind went straight to the gutter.

We make the news around here: A news drone, which I did not know was a thing until just now, was flying above Cape Town, South Africa, trying to get a better view of a guy who was threatening to jump off the top of the city’s Civic Centre. The reason this is news is because the drone almost knocked the man off the building. Luckily he didn’t fall, but it’s just one more data point against drones.

News drones??? Really????

A Stripper FAQ

An Imgur user going by the handle LittleQueenTrashMouth (probably not their real name) posted a two-part FAQ (part 1, part 2) about the actual business and experience of stripping, and it actually shed light on a job that people tend to either mythologize or severely denigrate. It offers one person’s perspective, but from a viewpoint rarely seen in most media. It focuses exclusively on female strippers serving male clientele, which I suppose constitutes most people’s image of how stripping works. Here are a few highlights (it gets pretty PG-13 from here on, plus a trigger warning for mention of rape and sexual harassment):

How often do the strip poles get cleaned? Continue reading

Unacknowledged Bodily Autonomy in the Reproductive Rights Debate

(The following was my response to a comment on Facebook about how people calling themselves pro-life view abortion as murder, the same as if a woman shot and killed her husband. I disagree with that analogy on many levels. I owe some hat-tips to a few people for some of the ideas expressed here. I’ll try to update if I can find those posts.)

Except that, in your hypothetical, it’s probably safe to assume that the woman’s husband was not physically occupying space inside her abdomen (no sex jokes, please). I understand that people think abortion is murder–I think they’re wrong, and I don’t think that simply calling it murder ends the conversation. The problem with calling it murder in a way that makes it equivalent to killing a separate, autonomous human being for whatever reason is this: if you are experiencing kidney failure, and I am the only known person on earth who is a match to you, no one can legally force me to give you one of my kidneys, whatever the medical consequences for you or the social consequences for me. The same goes for a blood transfusion or any other use of any part of my body. If I am brain-dead, but my kidney is viable for organ donation, no one can take my kidney unless I consented to be an organ donor. In short, I have complete and utter legal authority and control over how to use my body, even if it means that someone else dies. The alternative is that I could be forcibly anesthetized for kidney removal, resulting in a possible lifetime of medical complications against my will. From a legal standpoint, it doesn’t matter why I refuse to consent to organ donation. Calling abortion murder as though it is merely a decision to end the life of another person (and I disagree that an embryo or fetus is a person in that sense, but that’s a slightly different topic) ignores completely the fact that said embryo or fetus is occupying space inside another person’s body. No one can be compelled to donate a kidney, and no one can be compelled to give up their body for an embryo or fetus. Otherwise, a corpse has more bodily autonomy than a living pregnant person.

Now, at this point, the conversation usually (not always) turns to the circumstances of the pregnancy–i.e. the woman (or transgender man, or genderfluid person, and so forth) had sex, knowing that pregnancy is a possible result, etc. etc. The problem there is that you don’t know, unless you investigate the circumstances of the pregnancy, whether it was the result of willful sexual conduct or not, and even if it were not the result of voluntary behavior (e.g. rape), so what? You already said that you believe a fetus is a person with the right to life and so forth, so it shouldn’t make a difference how the pregnancy occurred. It’s just that telling a rape victim that they have to endure the multitude of difficulties presented by pregnancy seems morally abhorrent to many people. That shouldn’t matter if you truly believe what you originally said–so we come back to the beginning, and still have to contend with the fact that the pregnant person has bodily autonomy that still has not been recognized.

There are other arguments too, such as a right of self-defense if a pregnancy threatens someone’s health, but it still comes down to the right to bodily autonomy. Whatever you believe about an embryo’s or fetus’ rights, a separate, living, breathing human being–who was viewed as such up until the moment their pregnancy was discovered–is sitting right there, being ignored.

Whatever Happened to Those Rumored Algorithms That Could Recognize, Uh, Other Human Features?

20131226-112955.jpgI have used Chatroulette exactly once, out of morbid curiosity. After being “nexted” 4-5 times by bored-looking dudes who were disappointed (either because I don’t have breasts or because I wasn’t showing what I do have—I don’t know & I don’t judge), I decided it wasn’t really my scene. It has led to a few funny moments, I’ve heard, but I got to wondering whatever happened to those plans I read about a while back for software to block the unwelcomely-pervy side of Chatroulette—yes, in my family, holiday banter includes discussion of penis-recognition software (or PRS, as I’ll call it.)

My brother-in-law and I had an interesting unusual discussion about the process of creating a PRS algorithm. Not so much about the coding itself as the awkward discussions that might begin with “Why do you have so many pictures of penises open on the desktop of your work computer?” But did those rumors ever lead to anything? The Tragic, Yet Probably Inevitable, Snapchat Porn Scandal

I had no idea what Snapchat actually was until a few days ago. I had heard the name, but thought it sounded like something that would shortly go the way of Chatroulette.

Apparently, however, its owners and investors are so confident in its $4 billion valuation that they felt comfortable turning down a $3 billion cash buyout offer from Facebook. This made me realize several things:

  1. I may never understand how Silicon Valley determines “value;”
  2. Even a system specifically designed to delete pictures as a privacy measure is beatable;
  3. If it’s popular with teenagers, they’re gonna use it for sex somehow (cf. xkcd); and
  4. Sooner or later, someone’s going to use it for revenge porn.

I don’t always hate it when I’m right, but sometimes I really do. Sometimes I really, really do.

Science Fiction from the “Friend Zone”

A man who believes he has been condemned to the dreaded “friend zone” seeks the aid of a higher power, of sorts, in “Gather Your Bones” by Jenn Reese (h/t PZ Myers).

The story comes from Daily Science Fiction, a website that apparently delivers exactly what it’s name says, which is awesome.

I should probably also mention, for any denser reader(s), that the concept of the “friend zone” is bullshit.

Some search results are quite meta. (Via Wikimedia Commons)

– If you are a blogger who likes to include picture in blog posts, you are probably familiar with Wikimedia Commons, the crowdsourced site for Creative Commons and public domain images. Since pretty much anyone can upload pictures there, it seems inevitable that some of them will be…….controversial. Some of it might even be called “porn.” To combat the scourge of free porn, which is literally not available anywhere else on the internet, public pressure led Wikipedia to root out and delete all of the porn on Wikimedia Commons. Except that they gave up on it. This made Fox News mad. Which made giving up totally worthwhile.

– Due to what a manager calls “some major budgetary changes,” nurses at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville will soon be responsible for taking out trash and cleaning toilets in their patients’ rooms. Because nothing helps a hospital run more smoothly than an angry, demoralized nursing staff. Also, consider cross-contamination risks. Seriously, though, I wonder if the administrators urging the nurses to “pull together” are making any comparable sacrifices. Maybe they should scrub toilets for a bit. Builds character, you know?

– An Indian-American woman won the Miss America crown this week. This has angered a subset of Americans who seem determined to ensure that America cannot have nice things. Critics (although that seems too generous a description) somehow managed to link this to the anniversary of 9/11, while also making obligatory 7-11 jokes. Sigh.

Has It Occurred to the Pearl-Clutchers that Miley Cyrus Might Be Deliberately Screwing With Them?

Via laurapreponme.tumblr.com

Via laurapreponme.tumblr.com

An article on some website takes Billy Ray Cyrus to task for not condemning his daughter’s blatant acting-like-a-sexually-independent-young-adult in her latest video. (The article’s subtitle states “BILLY RAY CYRUS ENABLES MILEY BY APPROVING HIS DAUGHTER’S NUDE VIDEO FOR ‘WRECKING BALL.'”) When asked about her mostly-nude performance in the “Wrecking Ball video” (because a father’s opinion is the most relevant thing regarding anything an adult woman does), Billy Ray reportedly said:

“I’m a song man. A musician singer songwriter who loves all styles of music. But again…I come from the old school where it starts with an artist and a song …colliding if you will … in a moment where the song, the singer, the producer, the band and the listener become one. It wouldn’t have mattered if Miley would have worn jeans and a flannel shirt, a tux or a nun’s habit,” and that “her performance vocally on the tune reflects her root and sheer God-given talent.”

The author’s response to this supportive father, who is clearly proud of his daughter’s musical chops?

Seriously Billy Ray! It would have totally mattered! She might actually be taken seriously instead of the butt of every joke.

An expression of concern about a young woman being “the butt of every joke” is utterly, completely meaningless when it comes from the people making those jokes. Continue reading
